Remember when anime heroes took a full 40-second sparkly pause just to put on an outfit? From Sailor Moon and Digimon to classic Tokusatsu tropes, long transformation sequences used to be in almost every show on TV. But in modern anime, they’ve almost completely vanished.
In this video, we break down what actually happened to these iconic anime sequences. We explore how the shift from continuous weekly broadcasts to tight seasonal formats changed storytelling, how digital tools moved power-ups straight onto the battlefield, and how the massive shift away from toy-driven kids’ TV into late-night programming reshaped what gets animated.
Did modern anime lose a piece of its magic, or did we just outgrow the sparkly light shows? Let’s find out.
