Most shows are funded by a production committee rather than a single studio, and the real deciding number is usually Japanese Blu-ray and DVD sales, not global streaming buzz, sometimes needing four to six thousand units per volume to justify a second season. Many anime also exist mainly to promote a manga, light novel, or game, so continuation can hinge on that source material’s fortunes. Because each committee member profits from a different revenue stream, they don’t always agree on whether a season was worth funding again.
