In reviewing the 2020 BMW X6, Edmunds.com not only gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 score but said the ideal way to configure it was as an S-drive or 2wd 6 cylinder or X6 40i. It goes on to say that the best possible set-up for the 2020 X6 is with the M-sport package, upgraded interior and more driver assistance features.
2020 BMW X6 S Drive 40i
Well that’s not how I’d order it, but I wanted to see why Edmunds was so enthusiastic about this exact iteration of the X6 - so here we are at BMW of Hawaii in beautiful Kona, Hawaii - and we’re looking at a 2020 BMW X6 S-drive 40i with M-sport package, Sport Seats and Driving Assistance Professional Package
But first we are going to take a look under the hood. The 2020 BMW X6 is still built in Spartanburg, South Carolina using BMW’s CLAR or Cluster Architecture which means that different versions of this exact vehicle underpin almost the entire BMW line-up as well as the Toyota Supra. The engine is BMW’s B58B30M1 modular inline 6 with a single turbo. Virtually all BMW and MINI Cooper 3, 4 and 6 cylinder engines are simply ½ liter modules that can effectively be plugged together to make 1.5 liters in 3 cylinder vehicles, 2 liters in 4 cylinder models and 3 liters in 6 cylinder models, like what we have here. This B58 series engine utilizes a single twin scroll turbocharger with a water to air intercooler connected directly to the intake plenum to reduce air volume between the turbo and the cylinder, as well as direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and lift to produce 335 horsepower to go with 330 lb-ft of torque. That power is harnessed by ZF’s amazing 8hp 8 speed automatic transmission which shifts gears in just 200 milliseconds leading to a 0-60 time of just over 5 seconds
The M Sport Package comes with: Aerodynamic kit and Shadowline exterior trim, M sport exhaust system; 20" x 9.0" M Star Spoke Bi-color alloy wheels with 275/45HR20 run-flat all-season tires; Adaptive M Suspension; plus interior items unique to the sport model
Let’s take a look inside:
The Driving Assistance Professional Package comes with: Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant; plus a wide array of accident preventing safety features
Sport Seats are power heated seats with additional lumbar support
The standard infotainment set-up features a 10.2 inch display, 9 speakers, 20GB of storage and 1 year of complimentary Apple Car Play
The warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles with 3/36 free maintenance and an outer body rust through warranty of 12 years and unlimited miles. You also get free roadside assistance of 4 years and unlimited miles
Real world fuel economy is about 23 mpg combined, not bad considering the size of the X6 with it’s 117.1 inch wheelbase and over 4700 pound curb weight not to mention what the 2020 BMW X6 is capable of as an exciting alternative to smaller sport-luxury cars
