all-new A8, Audi will now add a matching S8 to its lineup. It’s expected to arrive here as a 2020, and while a regular-length version is available in global markets, we’ll get it strictly in long-wheelbase configuration.
While the A8 uses a V6 making 335 horsepower, the S8 will coax 563 horsepower and 590 lb-ft out of its 4.0L twin-turbo V8. As with the A8, it will also feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system with a small, lithium-ion battery that will provide fuel-free coasting and auto-stop, shutting off the engine during idle for better fuel efficiency. Top speed will be limited to 250 km/h.
Power will go through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and will power all four tires through Quattro all-wheel drive. The S8 will include all-wheel steering and a sport rear differential with torque vectoring. Its predictive active suspension works with individual wheels, lifting or pushing them down as needed to ease the jolts over potholes, and it limits body roll in corners. Ventilated carbon ceramic brakes will be available as an option.
The S8 will follow the A8’s styling, adding just a few hints including slightly revised fascias, quad exhaust tips, and badges. The inside alterations are also subtle, with carbon-fibre trim and embroidered seats.
