Documenting my process of how I searched out a PDR repair plan for an exotic painted matte metallic black BMW F82 M4. This damage was made by BMW service who accidentally rubbed up the wide quarter panel against something soft.
This was a repainted panel so the client and I elected to not glue pull, never know good the adhesion is on a repainted panel. I could tell be cause the gloss didn't match the bumper! Or the other side of the car! This whole right side was repainted. Exotic paint!
So I had to find a plan for pushing style of PDR.
Alot of the process is finding the repair plan!
Finding the acceptable access to get these lined up: - opening for access that can fit
- The largest, strongest tool that can fit - The lines of sight to our reference reflection - The technicians body position to make it physically possible
I thought I could get access going through a round opening at 12:00 in the wheel housing but it wasn't at a good angle for these dents. The trunk wasn't the best because of all the electronics. BMW electronics are a big liability for me. So I ended up finding the perfect access under the quarter after the rear bumper was removed. 2" factory round hole. I used the #Stanliner crane that was perfect for this shape panel. Pretty much ideal setup which made for a clean paintless dent repair.
** about the exotic paint :
No painters really want to paint these weird colours because it's so risky to just paint 1 or 2 panels. Painters usually just paint the whole side because if you get the gloss level wrong it will be super obvious right next to another original panel.
It'll look like how detailers do a 50/50 to show a polished section next to a dull section. Ok not that bad but I would say a 10% gloss variation match is unacceptable when compared panel butt up to another panel. After its painted there's nothing you can do except another repaint. Who wants that!
