If a Honda sports a red badge it means business, and the current-generation Civic Type R is the first red-badged Honda Civic to bring its business to the U.S. But if the street car isn't badass enough for track use, a select few—meaning those with a racing license—can now get their hands on the race-ready Civic Type R TC.
The Civic Type R TC slots itself between the Civic Si TCA and Civic Type R TCR cars, and it's powered by the same 2.0-liter inline-four as the production model, though it's upgraded to produce between 270 and 330 horsepower depending on the series. Honda's six-speed manual is used in the Type R TC, though it's updated with high-strength third and fourth gears and a Cusco limited-slip differential.
Final assembly of the specialized HPD Type R is done by Gradient Racing in Austin, Texas, though it starts as a white Type R from Honda's plant in Swindon, England; the engine comes from Ohio. The body panels remain the same; however, the exterior is modified with a high-flow front grille, a J's Racing FRP hood, and a race-spec rear wing. It's also fitted with a multipoint racing cage, an OMP racing seat with a six-point harness, Girodisk two-piece front brake rotors, HPD brake inlet ducts, and a Borla downpipe and turbo back exhaust.
The Honda Civic Type R TC is eligible for SRO TC America Touring Car competition, and it starts at $89,900. However, it's only available for Honda Racing Line members with racing licenses exclusively through HPD.
