BMW revived its Z4 sports car in 2019, but it wasn’t until the 2020 model year that the 2-seater received Bavaria’s acclaimed 6-cylinder engine. The Z4 M40i delivers 383 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, by way of an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination is more than potent enough to scorch the tires, and it will propel the Z4 to 60 miles per hour in roughly 4-and-a-half seconds.
Being a 2-seat convertible, the Z4 isn’t a cargo-space king, but it does remain competitive within its segment. 9.9 cubic feet of trunk space bests the Mazda Miata, Fiat 124 Spider, and Audi TT. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is also excellent, although Android Auto isn’t available and the Apple CarPlay system in our test vehicle had a very spotty connection.
Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS have tested the Z4, but it comes with an impressive set of standard safety features—and even more are available as optional equipment. Pricing starts at less than $50,000 for a base-level sDrive30i trim, but adding options to an M40i can easily bring the price tag north of $70,000.
